Throwback: A Five-Point Preview of our Saturday at Musikfest!

For those who may have missed the memo on Facebook… we’re not in Nashville this weekend. In fact, we’re back home, where this all started in Bethlehem, PA.
This is where Musikfest — the nation’s largest free outdoor music festival — is currently taking place. Back in the day — like, a year ago, even — we’d be all over this thing. All day. Every day. For 10 days every August, nobody played harder in the paint than us. Don’t even @ me, bruh. But if you do @ me, do it with style!
Granted, 800+ miles worth of distance has made doing that a little bit harder this year. But, when in Rome, we will do as the Romans used to do. Or, something like that.
That includes mapping out where you need to be today, if you’re in the same vicinity as us and want to hear some brilliant artists for the price of Free.99. Also, because it’s good to be back, we’re going to focus this solely on artists from the region we call home, to give you just a taste of the Keystone State’s best.
Let’s kick it old school with a…
Musikfest Five-Point Preview: Saturday, August 10
Artist: Cubbage
Location: Yuengling Lagerplatz (North Side)
Time: 1 p.m.
Why you should go: In our estimation, Anthony Cubbage is one of the most talented and versatile songwriters eastern Pennsylvania has to offer. His music is a melting pot of pop, rock, soul, jazz, and a bunch of other influences that sneak their way in. He’s certainly an artist to watch, no matter where you are in the country.
Artist: Ben Tyler
Location: Yuengling Lagerplatz (North Side)
Time: 2 p.m.
Why you should go: First of all, you don’t even have to move! And nor should you; Ben is a seasoned pop-rock veteran who has opened for any number of national touring acts, and has performed all over the Northeast. He’s also back in the game after a musical hiatus, and we’re excited to hear what he’s working on, up close and personal.
Artist: Roi and the Secret People
Location: Yuengling Lagerplatz (North Side)
Time: 5 p.m.
Why you should go: Your third Lagerplatz show of the day features one of the most dynamic rock bands you’ll find anywhere. Frontman Mike Roi is the consummate showman, and the band’s performances — whether acoustic or full band — are always lively and fun. This one is of the acoustic variety with Ed Golden on guitar and Jason Hedrington on keys (or maybe accordion, like last year?). Either way, expect some highly enjoyable rock and roll.
Artist: Jordyn Kenzie
Location: Provident Bank Main Street (North Side)
Time: 5 p.m.
Why you should go: Now, it may seem, due to their identical start times, that we’re forcing you to make a choice. The good news, however, is that Jordyn’s set is scheduled to go longer than Roi and the Secret People’s. You can easily catch both!
We’d recommend it. Jordyn Kenzie’s self-titled EP — and in particular, its lead single “Stir the Sky” — is star-making stuff. It’s exactly the type of country pop that plays well in today’s market, and you should make every effort to see Jordyn for free while you still can.
Artist: TIOGA
Location: Provident Bank Main Street (North Side)
Time: 8:30 p.m.
Why you should go: Creeping our way down to Philly, TIOGA are no strangers to the nation’s largest free outdoor music festival. And, their new wave revivalist brand of alternative rock is the perfect match for tonight’s forecast of beautiful summer twilight. For sure, this is another band on the cusp of breaking out beyond their home region, by way of their strong material and undeniable onstage energy.
Man… that was hard to narrow down. There are absolutely some that we missed, and that’s just the free stuff. If you want to spend a little bit, we can tell you that we’ll be in the house for Phillip Phillips down on the South Side at the Wind Creek Steel Stage. Phillips, an American Idol winner, is also receiving some incredible support tonight from Bronze Radio Return, Max Swan, and Bethlehem’s own Billy Bauer Band. You can learn more about that one here. It all starts at 5:30 p.m.
No matter where you go or what you do, have fun today. See you out there!
