For so many people, the grand visions we had for 2020 seemed to evaporate almost as quickly as they came to light. Bre Kennedy has taken this experience and turned it into her latest single.

The Nashville-based indie pop songwriter released “Where Did Summer Go” this past Friday. Co-written with frequent collaborator Brian Brundage, the single is a ballad for the dreams that were dashed by 2020’s bizarre circumstances.

“I wrote this while sitting at the window that I’ve been looking out of all summer. I had so many plans and dreams, to tour and get to travel this year. My friends had so many plans and dreams to do the same,” Kennedy said. “Every year is for growing and to try our best to bring our visions to life. This year, we had to put a lot of that on hold.”

Kennedy — who has opened for the likes of Sheryl Crow, Gary Clark Jr., Bird Talker, Michael Franti, Rhys Lewis, and Phillip Phillips — wrote “Where Did Summer Go” virtually with Brundage, and had the song produced by Kyle Dreaden at Nashville’s Trace Horse Studios.

“It’s bittersweet. Summer, to me, represents a golden and free time, and it leaves with the season. I tried to make the most of it, but I didn’t get the summer I thought I’d get to have,” she continued. None of us did. I have so much to process and reflect on this fall, and writing this song was the first step in me doing so.”

As for future steps, Kennedy is currently in the midst of writing her first full-length record, which is expected to hit in 2021. For now, reminisce on the year that wasn’t with this sweet, sad, swaying ballad.
