As Katie King approaches the release of her debut EP, Divine, we have an exclusive first listen to the record’s next single.

Today, we say hello to “Goodbye,” a collaboration between King and London-based producer Tearfountain. A EDM-infused ballad about closing chapters, “Goodbye” finds itself centered on the conclusion of a toxic relationship, and the relief that comes from setting oneself free. However — as King explains on an episode of The Quinn Spinn — its meaning can apply to any relationship, good or bad, that has run its course.

“Growing up in a small town, it’s not like you have a ton of people,” King said. “It’s a small community. So, (I was) thinking about relationships – and relationships that aren’t relationships anymore – that might have been good for a time.”

With those endings, however, come empowerment and newfound strength, which the listener will feel pulsing through the air during the single’s uplifting chorus.

“I needed someone to catch me, but now I’m grounded,” King said. “I don’t need someone to tell me I’m enough. I don’t need someone to validate me.”
